Is this what your house sounds like?
Does your house ever sound something like this?
“Did you brush your teeth?” “Where’s your backpack?” “We need to leave in five minutes.” “Do you have homework?” “What time is practice?” “Screens off.” “Time for bed.”
Some days parenting could qualify as air traffic control.
There are people to get places, things to remember, meals to make, schedules to manage and, somehow, everyone needs to end up where they’re supposed to be with the right shoes on.
Then we get to the end of the day and think,What even happened today? That was a whirlwind.
Sound familiar?
As we settle into a fall rhythm, there’s a lot to keep track of. Without even realizing it, many of our conversations with our kids can become about what needs to happen next.
We’re caring for our families and doing what needs to be done. But somewhere in all that doing, there are opportunities toenjoy being together.
And please don’t add “quality time with my child” to your to-do list. I’m talking about the time that’s already there.
Maybe you’re driving to practice. Instead of checking your phone at the stoplight or filling the ride with twenty questions, leave a little space. Turn on a song you both like. Let your child decide whether they want to talk.
Or maybe it’s bedtime and, just as you’re ready to turn out the light, they suddenly have SO much to tell you.
Of course they do.
Maybe tonight, you stay for a few more minutes.
This is one of the reasons theP in the PAUSE Process is Present.
Being present doesn’t mean giving our kids our undivided attention every minute. It means noticing the openings when they come.
A look that says,I see you.Listening to the long story about lunch. Laughing at the joke you’ve already heard three times. Sitting beside each other without needing to talk.
Connection doesn’t have to become a deep heart-to-heart conversation.
You don’t need the perfect question or a parenting lesson. Connection is enjoying our kids and letting them enjoy us.
So this week, noticeone moment you already have.
The car ride. Making dinner. Walking the dog. Bedtime.
PAUSE. Be there. See what happens.
The days may still be a whirlwind. Homework still needs to get done, screens still need to turn off, and I suspect we’ll still be looking for a missing shoe.
But connection isn’t one more thing to your list.
You know your child. You know when they linger a little longer, when they start talking, when they want you nearby, and when laughter comes easily.
Trust those moments. Make room for them when you can. That’s where connection grows.

P.S. Know another parent navigating the whirlwind of family life? Please share this with them. We could all use the reminder that connection can happen right in the middle of an ordinary day.
